coachella 2019 is just around the corner!

i started today off in a pretty good mood because i am no longer jetlagged, i had an awesome weekend hosting my friends michelle and stephanie from the bay area (we even did malibu wine safari in the rain) and i woke up before my alarm clock which gave me time to take a candlelit bath while it was still dark outside  before coming in to work a full day with about six hours of back to back clients.  is it really a monday if your workday isn’t totally slammed?  anyway, my day got even better when one of our admins delivered this magical box to my office…

this will be my fifth consecutive year going to coachella.  some might call me crazy and others might call me a music junkie – i cannot deny either of the aforementioned.

year one:

i didn’t have an exact idea of what i was doing but knew a couple of things: i needed a house with central air for 100 degree days, i did not want to wait in long lines to shower in the morning and my allergies probably couldn’t handle 24 hour exposure to dust.  a bunch of friends from college and work combined to stay in a house about one mile from the venue.

what i later found out: even 12 hours a day of exposure to dust is gnarly for my allergies, i should wear tennis shoes or a gladiator with the heel enclosed, braids were definitely the way to go for this black girl with a head full of hair and nothing compares to the high of hearing tame impala for the first time – jason and i have been fans ever since.  i was also told that i out performed drake – like every single line, rapped longer than him when he was switching songs, created my own dance floor in the field, sang drake the entire walk home with jason – it was a vibe.

year two:

i learned a ton from year one.  a girl with thick thighs like me need to wear shorts or longer spanx under my dresses to avoid chaffing that is painful for a week afterwards, multiple pairs of sunglasses is an absolute must, there is a such thing as buying too much alcohol for the house – keep it light since it isn’t like you can bring any of it in with you.

what i later found out: guns n’ roses still has enough energy to perform for three fucking hours, ice cube is still a n**** with an attitude and i will always be here for it, i wish snoop dogg was my uncle in real life and i don’t care if sia never shows her face again if she keeps singing those sweet melodies to me.

IMG_2176

*april 2016 – god, i miss being able to have my hair be a variety of colors that resemble my old lisa frank diaries

year three:

i had to exercise my basic bitch tendencies and wear a flower crown and i have no regrets. my friend makensy handmade them for all of us with fresh flowers.  i was beyond amped to see the xx, future, the head & the heart and kendrick lamar.

what i later found out: while flower crowns are stunning, when they are real, they are low-key heavy.  whatever – i did it for the gram.  the xx was a fucking religious experience.  future made me feel like i was at the dopest outdoor nightclub that i wish lasted for a full summer.  the head and the heart are so talented – their ability to harmonize and all of the live instruments – to die for.  kendrick lamar is one of the greatest rappers of our time – he makes me have hope for hip hop.

april 2017 – who wouldn’t want to kiss a man that looked like this? love you theo!

year four:

i splurged for vip and hoped i would not regret it.  beyonce had had the twins and was supposed to put on the performance of a lifetime. would miguel and daniel caesar make me melt in person? would cardi b live up to the hype? was eminem actually out of retirement? would the youngsters in greta van fleet put on a killer show?  i definitely needed a cute bandana for the walks through the dusty fields at the end of the night.

what i later found out: vip is worth every fucking penny.  beyonce was about to come for my entire life and then do it again with destiny’s child, thus fulfilling a childhood dream of mine. miguel not only made me swoon, but the love he has for his gorgeous wife nazanin is so apparent.  they are both so humble and smiled/acknowledged our group the day before his performance in vip and then nazanin replied to me on the gram.  daniel caesar’s voice is more buttery in person and he brought out h.e.r. which literally changed my life.  cardi b definitely lived up to the hype and somehow did not run out of breath while pussy popping on a handstand in 90+ degree weather while pregnant in full costume that paid homage to tlc – my old supervisor + amazing friend, joe, from my dealership days had never seen me rap like that – he was used to me singing along to coldplay in the office. eminem is definitely out of retirement and also, gave us all life by bringing out both dr. dre (real hip hop fans know how rare it is to see him out and about) and 50 cent (who might be petty but is incredibly talented).  greta van fleet absolutely killed it and truly blew up shortly after coachella.  i am glad i got to see them when i did. the bandana was a game changer.  shout out to my friend teki for making one for me in a print i absolutely adored.

april 2018 – how cute is the rose embroidery on the back of that dress?  my girl, roni, in photo two and me with roni (again) and her work wife, stacey, in photo three

year five:

will let you lovelies know in april after i go but as for now, i am hyped for another year in vip and cannot wait to see childish gambino, janelle monae, ella mai, dvsn, tame impala, solange, weezer, wiz khalifa, sheck wes, ariana grande, khalid, bad bunny, yg, h.e.r., pusha t, gucci gang and lizzo.

something i love about music festivals is how many different genres you can cover in one weekend or even in one day.  name another place where i could sway in the night skies with h.e.r. and then channel my inner thug with yg?   it is truly the best.

recommendations:

  • sunscreen is crucial no matter the color of your skin – black people burn, too
  • bring wet wipes to stay fresh during the day
  • a mini stick of deodorant never hurt anyone
  • comfortable shoes are a must – trying to break in a new pair at coachella will have you angry enough to curse out mother teresa
  • pack a denim shirt/jacket or a sweatshirt for the evenings – the temperatures really drop at night
  • a scarf or bandana is a must
  • i would rather be cute and comfortable for the length of the days so i was all about t-shirt dresses – what is the most comfortable thing you own that is presentable in public?  buy it in your favorite colors and wear that.  all of the dresses you saw me in each year (with the exception of flower crown year) were from asos – the dress from flower crown year was from torrid
  • don’t be afraid to see an artist by yourself that the rest of the group may not be into
  • have meeting locations identified before the day starts because your cell service might be trash – there were people that did not receive texts until monday…from SATURDAY (i just used caps, so you know it is real)
  • carry cash – i would recommend $100 per day; while many vendors take cards, oftentimes, the systems shut down due to poor signal and how many thousands of transactions there are
  • bring an external charger and cord
  • don’t be afraid to take a nap midday at the festival to recharge – use your purse or backpack as a pillow + thank me later

this was a lengthy one but a necessary one.  if you’ve been to coachella, i would love to hear about it.  if you are on the fence, let me know if you have any questions.

so i think i’ll go to boston…

hey :). it feels strange having gone this long without posting (almost a week) but i am back!  for those of you following me on the gram, i was in boston.  i couldn’t help but hum “boston” by augustana as we were landing.

IMG_4840.JPG

*this photo was taken as we were descending and the pilot cheerily announced that they were having “good weather” because it was a “comfortable 20 degrees”… i am clearly from los angeles because there was nothing about that sounded good or comfortable but i lived to tell the tale.  it honestly made everything we saw that much more beautiful.  it was like we were in a winter wonderland.

for the bulk of last week, i was chaperoning a group of amazing young women at the school i work at while they participated in harvard model congress, which is the largest congressional simulation conference in the world.  talk about an awesome way to empower young women and show them that they can truly be the change they want to see in the world.  we stayed at the sheraton in boston where the conference was being held and i would highly recommend this hotel.  there is an awesome fitness center, an indoor pool and an incredibly friendly staff.  the bar in the lobby on the first floor is a good place to go for a stiff drink and housemate potato chips to snack on.  the hotel is connected to the prudential center which is home to tons of amazing places to eat and shop such as eataly (my favorite market on earth), saks fifth avenue, top of the hub, aritzia and the list goes on.  the prudential center has easy access to the train station without ever having to step outside and is attached to copley place, an upscale mall with stores like bottega veneta, chanel, dior, etc.  it is the perfect place to stay, especially during the colder months if you are trying to avoid the elements.

my co chaperone made sure we got there a day early so we could do some exploring.  our first stop is a must if you find yourself in boston.

the john f. kennedy presidential library and museum is gorgeous and just rich with history.  i could not agree more with one of the guides who said that hearing jfk speak really highlights how incompetent the current president is.  he also commented on how sad it is that some of the same issues that were plaguing our nation in the 60s have either resurfaced or not really been addressed in the way that they need to be.  definitely made me think…

fullsizeoutput_51c0

fullsizeoutput_51be

as if i was not impressed enough by the amazing pieces on the civil rights movement, there were so many beautiful pieces from that era in women’s fashion worn by people campaigning for kennedy and worn by jackie o. herself…

lastly, there was an entire section dedicated to ernest hemingway who is one of my favorite authors.  his impact on the 20th century is unparalleled (in my opinion).

IMG_4865

IMG_4867.JPG

we trekked across town for lunch at quincy market.  part of why i love it is because there are so many options.  but since i was in boston, it seemed only right to eat a proper boston lunch courtesy of boston chowda company.

fullsizeoutput_51b9

*this crab roll and cup of clam chowder were to die for

the next day, before the conference started, we took our girls on a harvard tour.  it was incredible to see the campus covered in snow and to hear our australian tour guide’s take on what it is to be a harvard senior studying political science.

while it was amazing to spend some time with these wonderful young women, i was looking forward to my friend kendall coming to visit from new york.  even though we met in the bay, she has since moved to new york and we figured if i was going to be as close as boston, it did not make sense to not see one another.

IMG_4918

our first stop was douzo.  when i stumbled across it on opentable, the reviews were outstanding and it was less than two miles from our hotel.  once we walked in, we saw countless awards on the wall and i knew we were in for a treat.  the cuts of fish were outstanding and everything was fresh and buttery.  our waiting staff treated us like royalty.  and the price points were more than fair for both the quality and quantity.

IMG_4914

IMG_4915

after lunch, we were looking for a place to cozy up with a cocktail and found ourselves at brownstone boston, literally 200 feet from douzo.  the bartenders were friendly, knowledgeable and hefty pourers.  when we got there around 3pm, there were probably 10 other people in the bar.  then, it cleared out entirely.  by the time 5pm rolled around, it was packed to the brim.  i could tell by the way the bartenders were interacting with the guests that many of them were definitely regulars.  with the quality of their service, it doesn’t surprise me that so many people return.

next, kendall and i were going to meet up with some of her friends from high school.  little did we know, the bar that her friend selected, top of the hub, was inside of the prudential center aka connected to our hotel.  first off, how thoughtful of her friend to not take us battle the cold any longer.  secondly, how amazing that we did not even have to leave our hotel.  thirdly, how insane that once i let the host know we were guests at the sheraton, we were seated at this floor to ceiling window (without a reservation) that had stunning views of the city?!

fullsizeoutput_51b7

*this bar/restaurant is 52 floors above ground and they make delicious cocktails – i would highly suggest the melon spritz (it has grey goose melon, watermelon liqueur and sparkling wine)

since i was in boston primarily for work, i did not do as much exploring as i typically would when traveling.  i know kendall said a place she would recommend for a good spicy margarita and a cool vibe is lolita cocina and tequila bar.  that is definitely on my list for next year.

do live in/have you been to boston?  what are your recommendations?  let me know below.

malibu wine safari

as part of my birthday celebration this year, i went to malibu wine safari with some of my favorite women (who are southern california based), including my mama bear.

IMG_4792

photo cred: flint from malibu wine safari (group shot), random awesome lady from our tour group (shot of mama bear and me) who saw us hugging and said she needed our camera – seriously the sweetest!

even though i had gone to malibu wine safari last spring, there are many different tour options.  last spring, i did the mimosa tour which included four different types of mimosas (and they were generous with the pours), a charcuterie spread and a chance to feed some of the animals.  this time around, i was determined to not only meet and feed some of the animals…

IMG_4732

but to meet (and feed) stanley the giraffe.

the giraffe tour is roughly 90 minutes and includes three red and three white wine tastings along with crackers and various spreads.  our tour guide (flint) was absolutely hysterical.  both he and our driver (nick) were incredibly knowledgeable, easy going and totally accommodating.  they even offered to take some photos of us.  the views were absolutely stunning.

an extra special shout out to my friend gracelyn who not only came to malibu solo in a bomb ass outfit (including peep toe booties she will probably never be able to wear again) for capturing so many amazing photos of me and so many of my favorite women.  it was a great reminder of how truly wonderful it is to have so many women who bring different things to the table and show me how to be a better me.  love you, g!

IMG_4749.JPG

it was purely coincidental that it was national wine day.

when you go to malibu wine safari, please let me know about your experience!

p.s. i would highly suggest booking at least six weeks  out to get your preferred tour, time and to guarantee your group can be seated together (even without a private truck).

anytime is a good time to be in san diego

after having a ton of rain this january in la, the sun decided to resurface last week.  even still, nothing could compare to how stunning the weather was in san diego this past weekend.  i have never been to san diego and experienced bad weather or anything less than a spectacular time.

i was in town to celebrate my friend hillary’s 29th birthday and there was something awesome in store each day.

img_4269

had to post this solo photo of her because she is so fire.  the jacket is vince camuto and she found it at nordstrom rack for $30 (which is literally insane).  her boots (that i chopped off) are over the knee suede lace ups from ibiss boutique in willow glen.  even though they are in the bay, they ship.  anyway, we were en route to an amazing wine bar and completely unplanned, both had faux fur incorporated into our outfits.  while i did mine with a sweater dress, hillary paired hers with a sleek back bodysuit and some dark denim.

img_4271

my faux fur jacket from asos is on sale and available now! because i love a print, here is one in a print similar to hillary’s that is also from asos in extended sizes!  i love that it dresses up any outfit and has pockets large enough for my keys and iPhone – you know, the crucial things.  the sweater dress is also from asos and is on mega sale for $18! my booties are an old but faithful pair.  i just can’t bring myself to get rid of them.  now, onto exploring san diego.  our first stop was…

img_4272

carruth cellars wine garden!  there is no way i can return to san diego and not return to this place.  not only was the service phenomenal, the wine delicious and the build your own charcuterie board(s) to die for, the outdoor/open air vibe was so refreshing.  since it was a winter evening, they had heat lamps on for us and ample seating for our group of 12.  it truly was the perfect way to kick off the weekend and somewhere i could see myself going every single friday if i lived in san diego.

saturdays in san diego are meant to be spent at smoking gun.

fullsizeoutput_4e9a

not only is this bar ridiculously fun and super spacious, they have a brunch that is to die for.  i recommend anything with the brisket and a side of their cheese sauce. you can thank me later.

img_0541

our birthday brunch for hillary quickly turned into six hours of nonstop fun.  they even take reservations and are dog friendly.  trust me, it is worth your while.

xtt%m37+r0o3thhzzq8i5w

we were all wiped out from our boozy brunch and called it a night.  we headed over to pb the next day for brunch at world famous and it was worth the trek.

vjao3avwteq1cuse9qcnkg

not only does valet parking for $7 making the dining experience exponentially better, there is truly something on the menu for everyone.  our table did three orders of the fried brie.  because i wanted something a little cleaner after the previous day of shenanigans, i started with a delightful avocado toast and had an extraordinary salad loaded with fresh lobster as my main course.

the fact that this is the view from the restaurant patio and directly outside of it makes it even better.

a7macg3brewik3+and1h3g

winter in california is not overrated, especially in sd.  i cannot wait to go back in march.

if you head to any of these places while there, let me know what you think!

xoxo,

k. tap

it’s wine wednesday!

because i like alliteration, wine wednesday seemed like a decent title but if i am keeping it 100, wine could (and should) be had daily.

my favorite winery in napa hands down is domaine carneros.  while i tend to gravitate towards sparkling wines and anything on the lighter end of things (pinot grigios, rosés, etc.), domaine carneros also offers some amazing reds, specifically, pinot noirs.

img_1910

after going to this winery on several occasions to celebrate everything from birthdays to bachelorettes to simply being alive, i figured i might as well get a membership.  i was even happier with this choice now that i live in la again (as opposed to the bay area, where napa was more accessible).  there are multiple tiers of membership which you can find out about here.  i currently have the classic sparkling membership which includes two bottles of sparkling wine every other month and a magnum sized bottle of my favorite sparkling wine during the holiday season.  not only is it something to look forward to coming home to but the other perks include free tastings when i am at the winery, a private seating area (both indoor and on the terrace) on the weekends when it is beyond busy and discounts on bottles whether i purchase one or an entire case.

both the views and the customer service are unparalleled.  on your next trip to napa, be sure to stop by.  if you are like me and hate waiting for a table, call or go online a couple of weeks ahead of time to make a proper reservation.  if napa is too far for you to travel, order a bottle of the 2015 brut rosé sparkling or the 2014 vermeil demi-sec sparkling.  trust me, you will not be disappointed.
