vintners estates wine tasting – sf edition

i will be the first person to tell you that while i may still be in love with the bay area, san francisco has never really done it for me.  i find it to be a little too grimy, the car break in rates too high and i will never understand the cost per square foot for apartments that are literally the size of a postage stamp.  after a 12 year love affair with the bay area, this past weekend may have just changed my mind about san francisco.

since i was already going to be in the bay for jason’s birthday, i wanted to be sure i carved out some time to see dana since we had not seen each other since summer.  dana might as well be a five star chef so i figured we would explore her new neighborhood in sf, cook a little something and just catch up.  when my friend stephanie hit me up about this wine event, i was intrigued but assumed it would not be doable.  when she said it was in sf, i figured i would ask dana if she were interested since she is a wine connoisseur.  i mapped it out perfectly.  if i got to the city by 11am, dana and i could have a couple of hours to catch up one on one before the event started and that is just what we did.  not only am i in love with dana’s new neighborhood, i am in love with this event.

let’s be honest – i am not the type to ever say no to wine tasting but this was on another level.  now, stephanie had already been to this event a few years ago at a different location in the bay.  i have the best time with stephanie and i trust her completely so i would literally follow her off of a cliff because it is guaranteed to be a good time and we would miraculously make it back.

*a special thank you to stephanie for bring so many amazing women together

now let’s talk about the event.

if asked to describe this event in five words i would say: fun, overwhelming, beautiful, delicious, short.  it was fun both because i went with an amazing group of girls and because the people we met selling wine were truly passionate about their brands.  it was overwhelming because there were over 100 different wineries there.  it was beautiful because it was a 70 degree day with clear skies and a view of golden gate bridge.  it was delicious because you get to try as many wines as your heart desires and you can double back if you really love something.  i left having purchased five bottles (which we will get into later).  and it was short – even with us arriving within 10 minutes of the event start time, three hours did not seem like quite enough time to explore all of the tables i wanted to.  now, stephanie bought us the mid range tickets which gave us access to two private rooms which were much easier to navigate.  when we went to the center room, it was jam packed.  i found that to be a bit much but still thought it was worth it and purchased wine from all three rooms.  the cheapest ticket does not provide access to the two private ate rooms and the most expensive ticket grants you access to a balcony upstairs to drink on.  even if we had that ticket, i don’t think we would have ever made it up!

okay.  onto the wine that i purchased.  you are going to notice that the photos are taken in a variety of places.  this is because i was only able to take three of my five purchases back with me to la because i did not want to exceed the 50 pound weight limit southwest has for luggage.  now, i am eerily good at guessing the weight of my suitcase.  my thought was that i would pack two of the bottles, drink the mini bottle en route to the airport and leave the other two at dana’s apartment because i know she will drive to la for winter break and i can just retrieve them then.  this ended up being a great decision because at the airport, my suitcase was EXACTLY (yes, i just used caps) 50 pounds.  the guy checking my bag even showed his coworker and was like, “she’s done this before.”

IMG_4297IMG_4299

the back of beyond 2015 pinot grigio and holme estate cellars 2016 rosé were must haves.  i loved them so much that i knew i needed to pack them to bring home to la with me because i did not want to wait until december to be reunited with them.  both were crisp and light but with a substantial alcohol content.  i eat a ton of seafood and knew both of these would pair excellently.

IMG_4289

what drew me to the usual rosé was that the bottle resembled a beaker.  naturally, someone that works at a school appreciates this nerdy shit.  i also decided that i needed a glass of wine en route to the airport and that this would be the perfect to go drink.  i loved how much of the berries and rhubarb i could taste and will definitely be going online to order more.

IMG_4305IMG_4306

taylor treated me to a bottle of spanish white wine by albariño eleusis.  it was so fruity, subtly sweet and just tasted like summer.  while i loved this one, with the weather finally cooling down, i knew i did not have to have it immediately.  now, these cans of rosé.  people hate on canned wine and they should not when it tastes this delightful.  baca’s ring around the rosé is just to die for.  what i love is that it comes in a four pack which is the equivalent of two full bottles.  it is perfect for a picnic or a to go drink since you won’t need a wine opener and because it is in aluminum, it is as cold as wine can be without placing it in the freezer.  while i thought about trying to pack these, i resisted the urge.  dana is keeping both of the above safe for me until the holidays.

i was able to get all of the wine you see pictured above for under $100 – some wineries were even doing a 2 for 1 special.  every single station we went to had friendly and knowledgeable people.  i am already counting down until next year’s event.

have you been to this event or one like it?  i would love to hear about your experience.

yes to yeti!

a few weeks ago, i was lucky enough to get 72 hours of quality time with one of my favorite humans.  sarah, or lil’ spoon as i call her, literally never arrives anywhere empty handed.  so when she handed me this beautiful card and oddly wrapped gift, i was not surprised, just intrigued.  that is when the game changed.

she gave me the rambler 10oz wine tumbler by yeti.

IMG_4158

all of the things i had ever seen or heard about yeti have been all about the outdoors.  i have a lot of friends who love camping and hiking and they all seem to have yeti gear.  i would not say i dislike camping but i am never going to be the one to organize a trip.  i definitely am not a hiker.  and when it comes to the outdoors, i pretty much only enjoy being outside if i am right next to a body of water unless you count bottomless mimosas on an outdoor patio for brunch or wine tasting on the terrace of domaine carneros in napa.  this wine tumbler is great for both indoor and outdoor living.

i first tried it with a glass of red wine.  i find that whether i use a wine glass with a stem or one without, my red wine does not ever seem to remain the right temperature.  it ends up totally compromising the taste of the wine.  even after a full hour, my wine was the exact same temperature as when i poured it.  as for whites, rosés and sparkling options, it tastes just as cold and crisp 40 minutes later as it did the second i poured it.

the tumblers come in over a dozen colors.  they are made with stainless steel.  hot drinks stay hot and cold drinks stay cold.  for those of you who hate dishes, they are dishwasher safe. if 10oz. is not enough for you, there are 16 and 20 ounce options.  there are also a variety of lids and straws that are available for purchase.  i will definitely be purchasing more of these, especially before summer.  instead of bringing glass poolside, i will bring my yeti instead.

whether you want these for a night spent in your living room or your next camping expedition, the answer is simple – always say yes to yeti!

enjoy your saturday. 🙂

big sur for britt’s big day

i had to wait until i was well rested enough to write this post because it is one of the most special ones of the year.  this past weekend in big sur was absolutely magical and i couldn’t picture it any other way for britt’s big day.

*this photo is completely unfiltered which i know seems impossible

both leslie and i flew in from our respective homes after work on thursday and spent the night in san jose.  friday morning, we took a beautiful road trip to big sur.  the twists and turns to make it to our destination were absolutely worth it.  it felt like we had entered a whole new world.  we were staying at glen oaks big sur and it was just as charming as it was beautiful.  i think the selling point for me was the fireplace in our suite while leslie was obsessed with the heated floors in the bathroom.

directly across the street was this quaint little restaurant with comfy indoor seating and extensive (fireside included) outdoor seating – big sur roadhouse.  the menu is simple yet there was not a thing we ordered that was not delightful.  if you are there for breakfast, i would highly suggest the avocado toast with two poached eggs.  if you visit for lunch, the pulled pork sandwich (with fries) is phenomenal.

friday night was spent at a cocktail reception in carmel valley but the real magic happened on saturday.

britt and ryan got married at ventana big sur.  and while i had been to big sur before, i had never experienced it like this.  everything was just so picturesque.  the views were to die for.  brittany was a breathtakingly beautiful bride.  ryan could not have been a more dapper groom and his vows to britt created a flood of waterworks during the ceremony for us all.

the love present both between them and amongst every person present was all consuming.  it carried from the ceremony to the cocktail hour…

to the after party with my favorite sparkly dance partner…

my outfit for the wedding was a game time decision as i initially ordered this gorgeous peacock colored dress from nordstrom.  i even ordered some skims (which i will be reviewing soon) because the slit on one side definitely higher than what i would typically wear.  even still, the slit was just a tad too high for me to do anything other than sit or stand at the wedding.  that’s just not my style.  i knew i wanted to be on the dance floor.  so, on the day before leaving for the bay, i went to nordstrom and found this sparkly number by xscape – it was not only the only one left in my size but it was the only one left at all.  i took it to the dressing room and once it was on, knew i had to get it.  while it is not typically my style, i have been doing a lot of stepping outside of my comfort zone in 2019 – this outfit choice was no different.  my faux fur coat from asos was absolutely perfect when the temperature dropped in the evening.

i am forever grateful to the housing and res life team at santa clara university for placing me on the second floor of walsh my freshman year.  i honestly met some of my soulmates that year and it was nothing short of magnificent to see one of them marry the love of her life this weekend.  life really is better with #alittleRnB – congratulations to britt and ryan!

britt’s bachelorette in the big easy

if you are following along via instagram, you know i was in new orleans aka the big easy this past weekend.  the occasion was a special one – my very first girlfriend from undergrad, brittany, was celebrating both her bachelorette party and 30th birthday.  not only does she have family ties to new orleans but what a fun city to celebrate two amazing events in?!  her little sister, bridgett, the maid of honor, planned the best trip ever for a type a human like me.  there were typed booklets that included full fledged itineraries and kits with useful things for the weekend and life thereafter.

let’s first start with the airbnb – it was absolutely gorgeous.  there was tons of natural light, beautiful exposed brick and lots of open space – perfect for hosting a large group of women.  with it being in the arts/warehouse district, we were within a ten minute ride to wherever we wanted to go.

as soon as i walked into the airbnb, in addition to being obsessed with the huge navy tufted sofas on either side of the living room, i saw these cute, personalized gifts for each of us.  at first glance, i thought that the canvas item with our names on them were tote bags but to my surprise, they were aprons!!

B0E3572B-0BB6-4A21-906D-8B4C3FD0BCF9

little did i know, we would be using them to make beignets with chef syrena johnson, a chopped champion who is a new orleans native!  she prepared an amazing dinner that included gumbo, jambalaya, an outstanding salad with fresh berries and goat cheese and of course, beignets with homemade caramel, a berry compote and fresh whipped cream.  our starters included a roasted beet and goat cheese bruschetta and catfish fritters.  the flavor profiles were UNREAL. she was an absolute pleasure to have around and ridiculously humble.  it felt like we were catching up with an old friend who knew how to cook better than all of us.

**pardon my hair – i had been in a dad cap all day and so it was a little more unruly than usual

we stayed in after dinner and played a variety of games and had some in home entertainment.  what i can say about this group is that there was never a dull moment.  i think we will be 80 years old and still have inside jokes about this weekend.

saturday, we went to brunch at cavan.  this place was a dream.  i want a chandelier and a bar like this in whatever home i own longterm.  the service was great and our waiter was so personable.  she answered all of our questions about the menu and was more than willing to make modifications as requested.  the things i would recommend for sharing are the biscuits and gravy, the pancake (it is both sweet and spicy) and the rosé sangria (which has bourbon in it).  for my entree, i had the salmon cake benedict and it was to die for.   there is not a bad cocktail on this menu – we tried several from the bloody mary to the delta pearl – all were flavorful and smooth.

after brunch, all eight of us had tarot card readings at the dark lady.  while i know this is not everyone’s cup of tea, the eight of us had a wonderful experience and i think each person took something of value from our session.

we went home to rest up/change for dinner and headed out to the commander’s palace.  while for the most part, dinner was good, there were a few mishaps but they were properly addressed by management.  when making a reservation, ask to sit in brandt’s section – he was honestly one of the best waiters i have ever had in any restaurant.  i would highly recommend the pecan crusted fish as an entree and the creme brûlée as a dessert.

post dinner, we headed home to play another game before heading out for drinks and dancing on both bourbon street and frenchmen street.  while enjoyable, i honestly do not know how anyone braves the outdoors during summer in nola.  this frozen little treat definitely helped.

B4826DE4-C757-4022-96BB-089453AFF161

while many of the girls had to leave early sunday morning to catch flights, a few of us were able to enjoy a phenomenal brunch at shaya before heading to the airport.  the best advice i could give is to go with other foodies so you can order pretty much everything.  this may have been the best meal we had in a restaurant setting throughout the entire trip.

i would definitely go back to the big easy but in the fall or winter when the humidity is a bit less intense.

if you’ve been to nola, what was your favorite part?

veuve clicquot polo classic 2019 – east coast edition

for years, i have wanted to attend the veuve clicquot polo classic.  and yearly, i had to turn it down due to grad school or work commitments.  here’s the odd thing: i never even knew that there was one on each coast.  i had only ever seen my friends post about the one in la.  then, earlier this year, when i was looking into purchasing tickets, i saw that there was one on the border of new york and jersey.  being that one of my favorite people from undergrad, teki, had recently moved to new york and i was overdue for a trip there (hadn’t been since march of 2017), i figured it would make more sense to make a trip of it.  and let me tell you, i am so glad i did.

**this little black off the shoulder dress i am wearing is by city chic and can be found at nordstrom for under $100 – a true steal. it was breathable and perfect for the event.  i plan on getting this in a few other colors/prints!

even though the gates to the event officially opened at 11am, i wouldn’t consider any of the girls in our group to be morning people.  we decided that the best place to meet for brunch (and a little pregame) at our friend jasmine’s apartment.  we had not seen each other since summer of 2017 – it was right when i wrapped up grad school and moments before she moved to new york.  it is insane how quickly time flies.  as soon as we saw one another, it was as if we had just seen one another.  she hosted the most amazing brunch.  a couple of bottles of champagne and iced shots may have been served in addition to the deliciousness you see below.

we arrived around 2pm via ferry.  if you are someone who gets seasick, this is definitely something you need to know about.  the ferry was incredibly rocky but the ride was short.  the walk from the dock to the entry of the event is about 20 minutes are so.  if your plan is to wear heels, i would highly recommend packing a flat as well.  it will make the walk much more bearable.

as soon as we got inside, our first mission was to find inny.  leslie and i met inny while we were in spain for elisa’s wedding.  it was great to reconnect and she also took some great photos of our group before she left for the day.  she is truly a gem.

a few of us set up our little picnic area while two of the girls went to go grab our first two bottles of champagne.  now, initially, i thought about getting a table in the rose garden but after realizing that i did not fully know what to expect and looking at pricing, we figured we would try general admission.  our tickets were just under $100 each and it was worth every penny.  i would absolutely do it again and did not feel like we missed out on anything.  we were in close proximity to the dj and danced freely.  we met a ton of amazing people and also reunited with old friends.  we consumed bottle after bottle of veuve in prime weather conditions.  we reminisced about old times and talked about life and love.  we were surrounded by so many beautiful people of color in outfits that were absolutely to die for.  we kicked off summer in the perfect way.

*can we just take a moment to admire mandy’s amazing jumpsuit and flawless skin after getting literally no sleep the night before – how is this goddess even real?!

before we left, we had to get a couple of shots in front of the gorgeous flower arrangements:

oh – i am sure you are wondering where the shots are of people playing polo.  i literally had to steal a video a friend took because i had no interest in watching the actual match.  it was starting right when we arrived and i was more concerned with popping open our first couple of bottles and finding an area to stake out.  i have absolutely no regrets.

would i go again? absolutely.  the east coast veuve clicquot was so extraordinary that i am almost afraid that i won’t love the la one as much.

most of us went out afterwards.  i cheated and went to teki’s apartment to take a bath before rallying until 7am.  rallying was well worth it since the bar teki and leslie recommended ended up being the hot spot that night – so hot that michael b. jordan ended up being there later that night just a few feet away from us. and yes, he is just as dreamy in person and was incredibly gracious/humble with the wait staff – how could you not just love him?

the veuve polo classic was amazing.  new york treated me well.  the best part of it all is who i shared the weekend with.

have you ever been to this event in la? ny? both?  if you are on the fence and have questions, don’t hesitate to let me know.

xoxo,

k. tap
