from beautiful barcelona to married in mallorca

spain.

what a whirlwind.  it is hard to know where to even begin.

before i dive in, let me apologize for being mia this week – jet lag is truly a bitch.  that paired with me being maid of honor in a wedding today definitely took over this week.  i finally feel like i am back on a normal schedule so thank god for that.  now, onto spain!

i landed in barcelona on tuesday of last week (the 7th) and was feeling both physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted.  physically, i was exhausted from travel.  emotionally, i was exhausted because the day i landed was the two year anniversary of my grammy’s death which you can read about here paired with mother’s day being just a few days later while i would still be in spain.  mentally, i was exhausted because work has been absolutely insane the last couple of months.  to say this vacation was needed was an understatement.

upon getting barcelona, i checked into h10 montcada boutique hotel.  the lobby reminded me of a library you would see in a home with a lot of character that happened to have a bar in it – it was perfect for someone like me that likes to blog and read a ton.  the greeting was warm and filled with complimentary champagne.  the room was small but had everything i needed.  something that i noticed was there was no bathtub but i have found that to be the case at many hotels i have stayed at across europe.  for my next trip (if it is a lengthy one), that might be something i need to consider beforehand.

on that first day, my main goal was just to stay awake.  i found a little bar right by my hotel called tapa tapa.  i was able to enjoy patatas bravas (a traditional appetizer found in spain that consists of cubed potatoes covered in a delicious spicy sauce) and a few glasses of sparkling rosé.  a glass of wine is literally within one euro of a small bottle of water.  this was a blessing and a curse.  i am surprised i consumed any water whatsoever while was in spain.

after going back to the hotel, i got a bit more settled before going for a walk around the city to see the cathedral and find a place for dinner.  i stumbled upon this cute little restaurant – taverna del bisbe.  since the weather was decent, i figured i would sit outside and just take in some fresh air, especially after being on a plane for 10 hours to get there in the first place.

fullsizeoutput_585c

i enjoyed cava based sangria, paella and flan.  i have never had better paella in my life.  with me being a seafood junkie, spain was definitely for me.

7A34434F-5352-4BF2-A437-6A62DA35B534fullsizeoutput_5863fullsizeoutput_585e

i took a longer walk home just to see a bit more of the surrounding area in the event i did not get back to that same space the following day and stumbled upon some amazing street art.  clearly, the feminist movement is happening in barcelona as well.

Ga7DNmrbRU2tIISTo09NFgCD1FC169-FC59-4563-82FA-6441461B2C5F412FF1CD-7D52-40A3-8AD4-2B42AF98B38E

on day two, i got some much needed sleep and had a reservation at pez vela – a restaurant that was highly recommended by my friend elisa (who lives in spain and was getting married later that week in mallorca).  i love being near the water and this restaurant being beachside was exactly what i needed.  i ended up spending over four hours at this restaurant.  the impeccable service made it easy to do so.

both the burrata and ceviche i ordered were outstanding.  everything was so fresh and i needed to just see the sun again after missing it for days both in la and on my first day in barcelona.

i went back to my hotel to do a bit more reading before leaving to go to a bar recommended by my girl, chinae, paradiso.  i was unsure if i was in the right place because pictured below is the front door which is located inside of a deli.

but once inside, it was moody and magical.5zz3HmDhSQC494iq1QvVMwSlSBhA0KSvqEokFIJwnNmg

i loved everything from the spicy specialty cocktails that were garnished with sprouts to the beautiful candle holders (that my friend hillary found for me on amazon from the post on my story and had waiting for me in la when i returned home) to the amazing locals i met who sat with me while i had dinner and a couple of drinks.

since i was in barcelona solo, i figured going to a bar was acceptable but did not think i should go and explore the nightclub scene.  all that means is that i need to return soon.  thursday morning, i had an early flight to mallorca.  luckily, the flight was only about 45 minutes.  as soon as i landed, i knew i was in the right place.  it was just breathtaking.  my hotel (melia palma marina) being right on the water made me insanely happy.  the room here was substantially more spacious and the amenities could make you never want to leave the hotel.

i had this sweet note from elisa and jose when i checked in and i could not wait to link up with them for a little afternoon day party.

elisa and i had not seen one another in over a year so being back together was the absolute best.  being together to celebrate her love with someone who truly understands, supports and adores her made it even better.  this is how i got to spend my thursday afternoon:

that evening, i got to spend some quality time with leslie, one of my friends and old roommates from college.  it was so good to just be on the same time zone (since i live in la and she is currently in new york).  i enjoyed calamari, tuna tartare and wine at this cute little spot – la chica de santa catalina.

on friday, leslie and i met up with our friends brittany and ryan for tapas and wine.  i was so excited to see them that i forgot to even take a picture of the food or wine.  however, there is nothing wrong with living in the moment.  brittany had rehearsal for the wedding so she had to run.  leslie and i stumbled upon this spot, cappuccino, and enjoyed some tapas and wine before going back to get ready for the welcome reception.

i ended up wearing an outfit from asos – a black bodysuit and peg pants to the event.  you can read more about that here.

it was a wonderful event filled with people who loved the bride and groom dearly.  i also think it amplified all of our excitement for the big day.9FE4EEB0-2CE8-4428-8DF4-B673B003B33A

*from left to right – brittany, leslie, elisa (the bride) and me

i don’t even know how to describe how beautiful the wedding day was.  from the church to the outdoor cocktail hour to the two part reception, everything just felt like a dream.  pictures don’t do it justice but we will try.

we left for the wedding at 11:30am and returned at almost 3am.  it was unlike any other wedding i have ever been to and we made some memories we would never forget.  to say i was exhausted the next day is an understatement.  i was pretty much in a coma until after 2pm.  i met up with leslie to enjoy pizza and burrata at a place right near my hotel.

AB26B249-1DB6-485B-9109-CFB21C24331Efullsizeoutput_5870

afterwards, we went to the cute little gelato spot.  it was the perfect way to spend the afternoon.

leslie had to fly back to madrid and i did some packing since i had an early flight to barcelona the next morning before heading to la.  however, i couldn’t resist late night wine and tapas with brittany one last time in spain.

the trip was just extraordinary and i would do it all over again in a heartbeat.  i would definitely recommend staying at least 10 days to see more of what barcelona and mallorca have to offer.

to see more about my trip, head to my instagram and look at my spain highlight reel.

hope you are all enjoying your sunday!  i have to run to go get ready for my godsister’s wedding. 🙂

xoxo,

i fantasized ’bout this back in chicago…

if you follow me on instagram, you know i spent the second half of last week in chicago.  a few years ago, i was spending some time in chicago with some of my favorite reslife women – gigi and christine.  while i got to experience chicago as a city, one of the most memorable events of that entire year was greek easter.  christine’s family is fully greek and greek easter is celebrated like christmas, only bigger and significantly more fun.

when christine got married this past december (you can read about my bridesmaid dress post here), i promised her family i would make it out for greek easter 2019.  when i looked at a calendar and realized greek easter fell during my spring break week, i was elated.  this meant i could not only celebrate greek easter but spend some much needed quality time with my work wife from honda, reens and her amazing boyfriend, sam.  over the years, we all feel more like family.  so, let’s get to it.

by the way, i feel like i ate my way through chicago.  i clearly took the whole “spring break” thing to a new level.

i flew in wednesday night and felt like i was moving to chicago with all the luggage i had.  part of this was because my hair is not in braids so i had to travel with far more products than i did on my previous trip to the chi.  the second reason is because the weather forecast changed about 87438729 times in the week leading up to me arriving.  even with me waiting until the day before to pack, there were still changes later on in the trip that i did not have proper clothing for.  such is life, i suppose.

i kicked off thursday with candace, one of the bridesmaids from christine’s wedding that i clicked with immediately at my first greek easter.  we met for brunch at 3 arts club cafe – this amazing restaurant located inside of a restoration hardware store.  you guys, i was shook.  it was absolutely breathtaking.  who wouldn’t want to wait on furniture this inviting while their table was being prepared?  so many of my home decor dreams came to life within seconds of walking in…

i live for neutrals, especially shades of gray and white.  the subtle pops of color whether it be a plant or a bowl made me ridiculously excited.  as if that was not gorgeous enough, these are a couple of shots of the view from my table.

i don’t know where i would put it but i need one of these chandeliers for my own apartment.

the menu was simple yet covered all of the necessary bases.  candace and i ordered a bottle of rosé while trying to decide what appetizer to get.

CA1A9DEE-5282-4026-B5CC-2C14AC5E699A

we ended up going with the burrata and there could not have been a better decision made.  it was so fresh and the oven roasted tomatoes were subtly sweet.  i honestly could have gotten a second order to eat as my meal but wanted to be mindful of just how much cheese i knew i would consume over my time spent in chicago.  candace laughed out loud at me – i am truly a californian.

fullsizeoutput_5753

for our meals, candace ordered the lobster roll with fries and i had the kale caesar with shrimp and avocado.  the only thing we would not order again were the fries – many because they seemed to have been sitting.  everything else tasted just as good as it looks below.

xUmQlYyzRzC9t3wL8yfTngfullsizeoutput_575c

we couldn’t leave without satisfying our sweet tooth.  because they make their doughnuts in house, we had to try a couple of different flavors.  both the cookies n cream and the coconut doughnuts were so good!  they were just sweet enough and the texture was perfect – light, cakey goodness.

JOObv607Rn2bk+8hflR14wr3ROwVyfRbaxlqMa1aotFQ

it’s like they knew i would be writing a blog post about this dreamy wonderland because there was a perfect selfie mirror on our way out that i had to get a shot in front of:

CB652E7A-87ED-46CC-8698-AEBFFB8AC6BA

because the weather was so great, we headed over to one of candace’s favorite spots (quartino) that has great outside seating, including a terrace on the second floor.  for the record, “so great” in chicago is being in the low to mid 60s in april.  when i left la the day before, it was 81 degrees.

F9500DE1-F740-4FFA-87E7-7D04BB64BE5E

i will never say no to sparkling rosé in the sunshine.

i had a tiny bit of down time before joining reens and sam at one of the most breathtaking bars i have ever been to – cindy’s.

fullsizeoutput_5760

pqyBDyuAQZeeIOQLq2rxUQ

if you go, you have to order the drink pictured below – no bars.  i love just about anything with vodka.  the peach, citrus flavors and fizz made it even better.  this drink tastes like springtime.

CBFAF5AB-4FC8-47FA-97DF-0511007A663D

because i knew we would be outdoors, i did a slight outfit modification.  the weather in chicago shifts at the drop of a hat so instead of one of my cozy cardigans, i brought out the faux fur.

A8BvGZF2TWqLgRbO8GnY7Q

naturally, reens and i were accidentally twinning.  this is one of the many reasons she is my work wife for life.

fullsizeoutput_5707

can we talk about both of these views?

fullsizeoutput_570f

AwDKpMKeQjiaVXm2TQJ+5w

cindy’s treated me well and i will definitely be back.  during a warmer day, i would not even attempt to go here without a reservation.  we waited about 15 minutes to get to the rooftop on a weekday when it was already in the 50s outside.

on friday, reens humored me by taking me to do all of the touristy things i wanted to do.  while i had done most of them before, i wasn’t blogging then so circling back was necessary.  first stop was:

millenium park

fullsizeoutput_5774224CC012-5D01-4A23-AEE8-6977FB578F2B9phAj+KqRCqKtjULzBSLPw

next, we went to portillo’s.  i eat a hot dog maybe once a year but i cannot go to chicago and not get at least a polish dog with some cheese fries from this staple.  it was just as good as i remembered.

fullsizeoutput_5778

we swung by sears (now willis) tower because we thought this sky lounge was there but we were at the wrong building!  we pulled it together and made our way over to the signature room at 95th – it is at the john hancock building.  the views and the service were unparalleled.

C2FAB379-99DA-4BDB-B1BE-2F20C8AC3AAE

fullsizeoutput_577ap1AoMdFnTu2JkOPgWtmsEw

oddly enough, the best views were from the women’s restroom – it is like they knew women would want photos with this background.  we literally watched a group of women leave their table and request that their table be held so they could get a group shot while the lighting was still this good.  gotta love it.

we headed home and i finally got to try the deep dish and calamari served at giordano’s – my life will never be the same.

AA135D9E-3AD3-4EEA-B0E2-CB4D93E9E6CC

this was the perfect thing to coat my stomach before heading out to the bar to continue drinking and participating in my first turtle race!

ssucnRHKQl6iiFA66JDbeQIMG_08671rRot5anS4OrTjxQMi8oIw

big joe’s was such a great little pub.  the staff and locals were so friendly.  there was a diverse crowd.  i appreciated that the patrons controlled the music, the drinks were stiff and i happened to win my first turtle race with #4 – lucky dan.  i even have a shirt to prove it!

EBDUYzVYTlasZRoM6sQ5EQ84TpSumtQVmp9Sk%KWJRcg

on saturday, we trekked out in the snow.  yes, you read that correctly, the snow, for a byob brunch.  la really needs to take some notes from chicago.  there are so many byob places and that is a game changer.  breakfast house was amazing and the supreme chorizo hash had this unreal chipotle aioli that i could happily just drink.  probably sounds gross but it is honest.  the pancake that accompanied my chorizo hash was perfectly fluffy and absorbed the syrup just the way i liked.  i am certain everything was improved by the two bottles of champagne and bottle of sparkling rosé we polished off.

we relaxed for a bit post brunch and then by sheer luck, one of my closest mentors and friends, reena was in town for just over 24 hours.  we were somehow able to make dinner plans work and proceeded to spend literally four hours at this dope restaurant – ocean prime.

5F2B3A8D-6D50-480A-95A3-6A5ED42324C3fullsizeoutput_57d8fullsizeoutput_57d9518931B5-659B-4E82-B38B-4B77A480656F3FDB538D-6B53-4899-9E25-E76984504E7F

pictured above are about half the items we ordered:  the black orchid is a delicious vodka based cocktail with an edible orchid – how gorgeous?! for dinner, i ordered the lobster roll and the spicy tuna roll – both were ridiculously fresh which makes sense since they have the fish flown in daily.  for dessert, we split both the butter cake and the creme brûlée – we had zero regrets.  not pictured is one of the most beautiful cocktails i have ever seen – berries and bubbles – it is also vodka based and you can see its goodness on my chicago highlight on the gram.  we had the smoked gouda tater tots and the broccoli and cauliflower.  all were flavor packed and just perfection.  we were so impressed with both the ambiance and the service seeing as how the restaurant has only been open for three weeks.  they have several other locations but if you go to the one in chicago, ask to be seated in tyler’s section.  he is an absolute riot and so friendly and relatable.

sunday rolled around and it was so bittersweet.  i was sad knowing my trip was coming to an end but was so pumped to head to greek easter.  i could not wait for reens and sam to experience it.  there really is no way to really explain it – you just have to live it.  i think they thought i might be exaggerating until we walked up the driveway with all of my luggage (since i was going straight from aster to the airport) and my favorite uncle in the family screamed that we needed to take shots.

if you have seen my big fat greek wedding, think of that kind of situation only better because of the company, the laughter, the never ending drinks and the best lamb you have ever had in your life.

getting to reunite with almost all of the bridesmaids from christine’s wedding and squeeze her parents and karl (her husband) in person was the icing on the cake!

chicago was exactly what i needed to help get me through the last month of work.  it was filled with friends who have become family, great food, tasty cocktails, tons of fun and just joy.

if you have been to chicago, what places were must sees for you?  i would love to hear about it in the comments below.

coachella 2019 – weekend one (vip)

for those of you who have been following along for a bit, you might remember my post about all things coachella, what my favorite acts have been over the years and what to do to prepare.   well, if you follow me on instagram, you know that i went to coachella weekend one this year and it.  was.  everything.

PPWYJkbLQYytfEpcbhjKcA

first, i have to give a shout out to my girl, hillary.

fullsizeoutput_5540.jpeg

this was my first year going to coachella where i was not in charge of renting the house, organizing travel, doing grocery shopping, etc.  it was strange to relinquish control but i knew if there was anyone that i could trust, it was my fellow type-a aquarian.  when i walked in and saw this charcuterie spread while being handed a glass of prosecco, i knew i was in the right place.

fullsizeoutput_562e.jpeg

there were all of these cute touches that let me know our weekend was off to a great start even with it only being thursday.  one of our housemates (jackie) got us all custom cups which were perfect for to-go drinks or time spent in the pool/hot tub.

fullsizeoutput_562f.jpeg

thursday night, we kept it low-key (getting turnt in pajamas) and did a family dinner in.  naturally, i had to bake my mac and cheese.  there were some first timers and it went over well.    the next morning, we did a family style breakfast with another beautiful platter prepared by hillary before heading out to the festival.

fullsizeoutput_5631.jpeg

something we did differently this year was get a vip parking pass.  instead of using a driver and having to walk forever through dust and gravel to get to a driver or a lyft/uber situation, we drove my suv.  it worked out perfectly because preston (my infiniti suv – yes, i name my cars) seats eight people and there were eight of us in the house.  this was an absolute game changer and if you go to coachella and do vip tickets for the weekend, this is well worth it.  the pass is $150 for the weekend which is more than what our group would spend in one day during previous years.  now, let’s get to the music, food and fashion.

friday:

on friday, we started off in one of the tents to see walker and royce.  it was the perfect set to get our energy going for the weekend.

572b6d58-4dd5-4472-8b3d-da281239bb6f.jpg

after that, my girl roni and i were on the hunt for something to eat since it was well after 4pm and we hadn’t eaten since breakfast.

fullsizeoutput_5636.jpeg

we found our way over to sweetfin for a super fresh and tasty poke bowl + tacos 1986 for ultra authentic, made to order street tacos.  for sweetfin, i would highly recommend the salmon or the spicy tuna (i just asked them to hold the ginger).  at tacos 1986, the carne asada and al pastor did not disappoint.

*both of these are located to the left of the main stage in vip

with it being a warm day, we pitstopped at one of the cupcake tents for a glass of sparkling rosé with a fresh strawberry lemonade fruit pop.  there were multiple wines and fresh fruit pops to choose from but on a sunny day, nothing compares to rosé.

img_0255

*the velvet dad hat is from forever 21, the denim shirt and romper are both from asos and my little purple marc jacobs crossbody (my go to festival bag) is from nordstrom.  i love a romper at a festival because you aren’t impacted by wind, you can dance and sit on the ground without flashing anyone and you don’t have to worry about chaffing if you have juicy thighs like me

we reunited with the group to take a quick group shot before catching the second half of kacey musgraves.  she really had this way of connecting with the crowd and her voice was angelic.

IMG_0290

both roni and dre recommended the group go together to see gorgon city.  i enjoyed it because even though it had an edm feel, their vocals were out of this world.  it really softened it (which i greatly appreciated).

roni and i stayed at that stage to see ella mai.  if the only song you’ve heard of hers is boo’d up, trust me, you are missing out.  whether you are madly in love, experiencing heartbreak, rebuilding your confidence or totally aware of your self-worth, she has a song for you.

D1242BCE-61E3-4FC8-9D9E-D34261025671

from there, we made our way over to the main stage because our next three acts would be there – the 1975, janelle monáe and childish gambino.  i listen to the 1975 a ton at work so seeing them live was surreal.  janelle monáe completely embodied black girl magic – her performance was soulful and exhilarating.  i am always impressed by how well she uses her platform to bring awareness to marginalized communities whether it be people of color or members of the lgbtq community.  not only does she have pipes, but she has the biggest brain and heart packed in this tiny package.  childish gambino is someone i have followed since undergrad – first, in his comedic endeavors and later, musically.  between his hit show ‘atlanta’ and his provocative music that truly has a message, it was cool to see those elements combined on stage.  he truly does not give a fuck about what people think and had decided to do his set his way.  he even told people that if they were looking for something cool to put on instagram, they should probably go to a different stage.  i respect that.

saturday:

*pictured with dre, lauren and hilly – their energy is unreal

2351225C-BFBF-4347-960B-2F9A2894BCC5

i truly don’t know what i would do without this girl

on saturday, i was completely blown away by every single act we saw.  sabrina claudio was our first act at main stage – so sensual and melodic.  next was bazzi – he was super catchy and high energy + he brought out ty dolla $ign which was the perfect thing to really pump up the crowd.  let me say this – the rest of saturday was completely nostalgic.

next, we went to the heineken tent to see the roots.   you guys – i was not ready.

first of all, i listen to you got me with the roots and erykah badu every single day so being able to see them live and then see them perform that song live nearly took me out.  you forget how many songs they are affiliated with or just how talented they are.  their cover of sweet child of mine gave me goosebumps.  they were totally engaged with the crowd and being that i was close enough to see the beads of sweat on their foreheads, it was truly the experience of a lifetime.  diplo happened to be sitting right in front of us enjoying the set and was super friendly with people in the audience as well.

we skipped over to main stage to see weezer.  1 – they still have it.  when they sang say it ain’t so and the sweater song, i lost it.  2 – they brought out tears for fears and did a duet of everybody wants to rule the world.  3 – they brought out tlc to do a duet of no scrubs.  what did i do to even deserve this greatness?  i have no idea.

we stayed at this stage to see tame impala.  so i discovered tame impala during my first coachella in 2015 and my friend jason and i have been hooked ever since.  i felt like a proud mama bear seeing them go from being one of the openers versus being the headliner of the night,  not only have they sounded flawless during every live performance i have seen them in, but the light show and array of colors just creates a totally different experience than anything else i have ever seen.

the group reunited at the end of the night for major lazer and danced until the very last second of their performance.  you would think that we would be exhausted by that point but ending with such an exciting set really just left me with a ton of energy.  we had to continue the party back at the house with music, cocktails and hot tubbing.

the squad

so we get to the festival and it was the hottest day by far.  before we could even get inside, i thought dying of heat stroke might occur.  luckily, dre took care of me and had me chugging ice water in the shade as though my life depended on it.  i literally call him dad now.  he took care of the group, maneuvered us through crowds and would do checkins to be sure we were each accounted for.  every coachella group needs a dre.  i love that kid.

we started off with pusha t.  people sleep on pusha but i have been riding with him since clipse dropped grindin’ with pharrell back in the early 2000s.  i saw him at treasure island in oakland back in october and couldn’t resist seeing him again.  it definitely was the right move.  we stayed at main stage to see bad bunny and i was impressed – i now get the hype.

my friend stephanie put me on lizzo last year so in january when the lineup was released and i saw she was on it, i made it my mission to see her.  roni hadn’t heard of her but was down.  when i tell you that she stole the fucking show, believe it!  she exudes confidence, is unapologetic and is the perfect representation of a big black girl who is killing the game.  i was able to link up with two friends from scu at this set and it made me ridiculously happy.   by the way, lizzo’s album dropped today and the only thing above it on iTunes is beyonce – let that shit sink in.

we reconnected with the group for yg and he did a beautiful tribute to nipsey.  the way the sky looked at that moment is how i envision heaven looking.

UkywCVN7TGaSwNG5isY98w

i don’t think people realized how impacted he was by nipsey’s death until yg opened up about being so submerged in grief that he had been in bed until 4pm pretty much daily since his passing.  i honestly believe that he felt he owed it to nipsey and his fans to do coachella.  this was the most high energy set of the day.  it was not just because of his guests (tyga, 2chainz and big sean), it is because he has hit after hit after hit.  everything from toot it and boot it to fuck donald trump to big bank, the crowd went wild.  it is also insane to see so many gang affiliated people from different sets put their differences aside for the sake of good music.  made me wish my little brother was with me.  yg is one of his top three favorite rappers of all time.  if he is ever in your area, make it your mission to go to his show.

i sat in the rose garden with auntie reyna and sipped rosé while listening to sofi tukker – an act that was not even on my radar but is now on multiple playlists of mine.  that is one of the things i love about coachella – discovering new music.

i caught a couple of khalid’s songs in passing while heading over to see h.e.r.  i saw h.e.r. last year when she came out for her song with daniel caesar and proceeded to do a song solo.  since then, i was hooked.  not only did she sing the song that put her on the map, best part, but she did this amazing fusion of that song that led into nothing even matters (by lauryn hill and d’angelo) – it sent chills down my spine.

for the finale, we went to the main stage to catch ariana grande.  she opened with god is a woman which was flawless.  we were taken aback in the best way when *nsync came out – i have always loved jc chasez (i think he is the most underrated boy band member of all time – fight me) so my childhood dreams were fulfilled.  the rest of ariana’s set wasn’t really thrilling us, even her bringing out nicki minaj.  i couldn’t tell if there were audio issues or what but our group decided to leave.  just as we were exiting vip,  i heard the beat to mo’ money, mo’ problems drop and had a little regret about leaving early because i am such a diddy fan.  luckily, i could still hear him on the walk to the parking lot.

all in all, it was an amazing weekend with even more amazing people.  i am already excited for next year.  presale tickets go on sale in june – don’t forget to get yours.

if you went weekend one, who was your favorite act?  if you are going this weekend, who are you most excited to see?

puerto vallarta

since 2013, april has been a heavy travel month for me.  when i was in the bay area for undergrad/grad school, i would drive or fly home for family birthdays (both my brother and godson are on april 13th and my godbrother just a week later), try and get away for spring break and of course, coachella is always in april and this will be my fifth year in a row.  when one of my oldest friends from high school, jessica, invited me to celebrate her marriage to jon (a total sweetheart), i knew i had to make it happen.  when walking into my airbnb with my friends carolynn and tom, i knew i made the right decision when this was the view from our balcony without a filter.

after we got settled, we called an uber to head into town.  now, math is not my strength but when i tell you that this is one of the most inexpensive trips ever, i mean it.  most of our uber rides were $5 or less.  even my ride to the airport on the last day (about 25 minutes) was $9.  if you are trying to ball on a budget, puerto vallarta is for you.  anyway, we were determined to get some tacos and a cocktail and tacos revolución, a local favorite, did not disappoint.  we started with chips and guac which came with a variety of fresh salsas.  my favorite was the pineapple mango habanero – it had this subtle heat than lingered but was not at all overpowering.  both carolynn and i had the jalapeño margarita which was delicious.

what is missing are the tacos!  i was so hungry that i forgot to photograph them.  i had four street tacos – one grilled fish, one carne asada, one al pastor and one carnitas.  each one was served on a corn tortilla that you could tell was made in house.  as if the food and drinks weren’t good enough, we knew we were in the right place when the waiters had on these amazing shirts that my friend carolynn and i needed in tote bag form.

we went back to the airbnb to have some cocktails and relax a bit before heading back into town.  if you know me, you know i am a bravo superfan.  i have been watching real housewives of orange county since season one, episode one.  i knew that if i was in puerto vallarta with someone who enjoys bravo as much as i do, we had to go andale’s.  so we did.  and lord have mercy, it was an experience.

the crowd looked like we were in an old dive bar in orange county – tons of tan white people singing along to oldies.  the margaritas were nearly the size of my head and three of them costs under $15.  the bar staff was ridiculously friendly and engaged with each consumer.  while it is not a place i need to go to every single time i am in mexico, i am definitely happy i can say i experienced it.

when we got back, i had to take a dip in our pool and it was everything i ever needed.

on saturday, we went to the wedding at the hyatt.  to say it was gorgeous is an understatement.  jessica and jon aren’t one of my favorite couples simply because of how beautiful they are, but because of how beautiful the life is they are building together.  they are truly in sync and make each other the best versions of themselves.  it was an honor to share their special day with them.  here are a few of my favorite moments/views:

after the wedding, we went and partied at mandala (a nightclub with bottle service) and it was definitely worth the hangover i had the next day.

on sunday, before heading back to the airport, we had brunch on the beach and all were in agreement that something like this in la/orange county would be greatly appreciated.  to be just footsteps away from the water was not only breathtaking but helped cure my hangover.

it was the perfect 48 hour getaway and i would highly suggest it for anyone in california looking for a quick, beautiful and inexpensive trip.

if you have been to pv and have suggestions, i would love to hear them.  if you have any questions for me, let me know!

the travel companion i couldn’t live without – longchamp large le pliage tote

i first got a longchamp tote when i was wrapping up undergrad at scu.  we were having more rain than what was normal for the south bay and i hated that my laptop and textbooks were not safe in the bags i was carrying.  those items were far too pricey not to protect.  i also almost had a stroke when my planner got a little water damage – that thing is like my bible.  enter my first longchamp bag…

FyZY9+wvQbCWV9eNQc5NpA.jpg

since early 2011, this has been one of my babies.  from school to beach trips to music festivals – you name it, this bag has been there.

i have always enjoyed traveling and once i wrapped up undergrad, i was really trying to make up for lost time.  it was during that time that i realized that this bag is the perfect carry on.  last month, when i was gearing up to go to boston, the weather forecast had predicted a ton of snow and rain and i realized that this longchamp bag was on its last leg – mainly because i had packed too many heavy textbooks with sharp corners in it over the years.  it had caused these tiny holes in the bottom corners of the bag.  finally, it was time to replace it and luckily, i received this new one as a birthday gift from my adopted little (big) brother, tj.  while he might be younger, he is only four inches shy of seven feet so calling him little is laughable.

anyway, here it is!

djX8Py5CR2e7rNrTMbrN0w

before i get into all of the things i fit into this bad boy, let’s first take a moment to admire this blushy color that goes with absolutely everything.  next, let’s talk about how compact it is…

Br0oVAnCS1eUvvEYgILg9Q

i love how it folds and can be thrown in your suitcase when you are done using it.  i also sometimes fold it and throw it into the purse i am carrying when traveling in the event that my checked luggage is overweight and i need a small but durable bag to put overflow contents.

now, for my trip to boston, i had a variety of items inside:

  • my personal planner

6bcTieMsScuWz+oxZqoiCg

  • my work planner

PMDeF7wWSmCjSTH+3CoU0A

  • my journal (where i track my food, exercise and alcohol consumption)

Hio10SG0R1yX+1Fj4Oy25g

  • my MacBook, charger, external charger, iPhone earbuds and beats headphones (crucial for any flight)

sKEb0OuaSturyZwTfqQNPw

  • my pen case (because i need like 10 for all of the color coding i do), a small cosmetics bag (a compact, wet wipes, spare tampon for an emergency, hair tie, mini lotion) and my wallet

5HzKuEHbR9uHjgUnWMMO0Q

  • whatever book i am reading at the moment

VxG7Umw7T7aLC%SKm6iE8w

  • necessary meds, gum, business cards and lip balm

vdYZqSYCQIeDKR3fc+56QQ

  • my drybar reusable bag (for any last minute airport purchases)

84wXm1+bRxWBFa2OPlCJRQ

and just so you actually believe that all of the aforementioned items comfortably fit into this sleek bag…

ESdObjdUT4CHaCIetZsEMA

i would highly recommend this bag in general but i especially recommend it if you are someone who travels frequently like i do.  it fits everything, is great in any weather and is easily tucked away.  plus, it comes in a variety of colors.

if you have any questions about a longchamp tote, send them my way.
